Connecting The Dots

Daniel Stafrace, Director of AI Platform, DevOps and Cybersecurity, Game Lounge

The current gambling world is nothing like your grandpa’s. Or your pa’s, for that matter. Just ask Daniel Stafrace.

The industry today is converging around three pillars, says the director of AI Platform, DevOps and Cybersecurity at Game Lounge: artificial intelligence, cloud platforms and cybersecurity.

“My role sits exactly at that intersection,” says Stafrace. “I’m responsible for making sure our data, infrastructure and security posture all work together so we can operate as a truly data‑driven, tier‑1 iGaming affiliate while still respecting regulation, player protection and regional requirements.”

In short, he and his team help business move faster, testing new experiences, markets and products without losing sight of stability, compliance, or trust—critical in this industry. “I oversee how we design, architect and run our platforms,” Stafrace says. “I try to keep it very grounded. My job is not to chase buzzwords.”

The Malta native got into this technology from the ground up, first as an IT technician with a grain imports company. Then he went from grains to gambling, starting as a DevOps engineer dealing with real deployments, outages and performance bottlenecks.

“You learn quickly what works in production,” Stafrace notes. “As platforms became more cloud‑native and data‑heavy, it’s a natural step to gradually bring AI into the picture as a tool to detect anomalies, support decision‑making and streamline workflows, rather than as something separate.”

Before Game Lounge, Stafrace spent six years at KingMakers, one of the largest gaming companies in Africa, as an engineer and head of IT. “That taught me a lot about scale, regional realities and building resilient systems,” he says. He initially joined Game Lounge as senior manager of TechOps and, after four months, was promoted to head of cyber and IT. “I stepped up again into the director role, where I now oversee AI platform, DevOps, IT Operations and cybersecurity across our global affiliate portfolio. My experience is rooted in a highly technical background while having the right soft skills to manage people at every level. My passion has always invested in the right talent and making them grow under my wing.”

Stafrace earned his IT diploma from Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, as well as a master’s degree and a diploma in business management to strengthen his leadership and people‑development skills. “Now my study focus is shifting heavily toward AI,” he says. From the outside, he acknowledges, it can look like a lot. “But for me, it’s all part of one system. My role is to connect the dots.”

There’s no shortage of AI ideas and prototypes; the challenge is turning them into stable, compliant and value‑generating systems in production. “In the short term, I expect a lot of noise tools being adopted quickly without proper governance.” He also anticipates “some regulatory pushback and a few high‑profile failures, which will be uncomfortable but necessary for the industry to mature.”

Going forward, Stafrace sees himself firmly in gaming and entertainment, and increasingly at the interface of technology, regulation and ethics. “I’m not a lawyer, but I can translate between legal/compliance teams and engineering teams, helping to design AI‑driven systems that are innovative but also defensible and aligned with the rules. Over time, I expect to contribute more to industry‑wide conversations, whether that’s through Emerging Leader initiatives, advisory roles or collaborations where I can help other organizations bridge the AI‑execution gap.”

Sound exhausting? No worries.

“I’m very intentional about recovery,” he adds. “Travel is a big passion. I’ve visited over 25 countries; exploring new places, cultures and food helps me reset and keep perspective. I also make time for the gym and fitness; given my focus on health optimization and recent surgery and recovery, taking care of my body and mind is non‑negotiable for me.

“And at heart I’m still a gamer: I enjoy gaming, movies and the occasional platter by the sea at golden hour.”
