Star Confirms Appointment of New Group CEO
Star Entertainment Group has announced the departure of Steve McCann as its group CEO and managing director, with Bruce Mathieson Jr. to step in on a permanent basis.
McCann officially exited the role on December 16. He will remain available to assist through a handover period relating to government and regulator interaction until July 8, 2026.
McCann only became CEO of Star in July 2024, having previously led Crown Resorts in the same role. His departure means Star will welcome its third permanent CEO in just four years.
Robbie Cooke replaced Matt Bekier in October 2022 after Geoff Hogg took on the role temporarily. McCann then took the helm after Cooke left in March 2024, with Mathieson now set to step up.
‘Right Time’ For McCann to Leave Star
Commenting on his exit, McCann said it was the “right time” to exit the company after the recent strategic investment by Bally’s Corporation. He said it provides an opportunity for Star to “move in a new direction and pursue a pathway to recovery and future growth.”
“Now is the right time for new leadership to be put in place with the experience and passion to build on that momentum and take Star forward,” he said.
“I want to thank our 8,000-strong workforce for their commitment and resilience throughout a challenging period. Their dedication has been central to safeguarding the business and positioning it for its next chapter.”
Another New Chairman at Star
Mathieson will step down as chairman of Star to become CEO. He only took the role on in early December but will be replaced by Soo Kim, subject to final approvals.
The board will now be made up of Soo Kim, Mathieson and George Papanier.
“On behalf of the board, I want to thank Steve for his strong leadership and hard work during one of the most complex and challenging periods for Star,” Mathieson said. “He joined at a time of crisis for Star and has helped to deliver a critical financial reset for the business and successfully progressed our remediation plan, which have laid the foundations for Star’s long-term future success.”
“We wish him well in his next endeavors,” McCann said:
Kim added: “We are fortunate to have Bruce lead our company as CEO. George and I understand what an honour and responsibility it is to join and contribute to the board. We are confident our best days are ahead.”
