Queensland Government Defers Star Gold Coast License Suspension

Queensland’s Government has elected to defer the suspension of the Star Gold Coast casino license to September 30 next year following advice from the property’s special manager, Nicholas Weeks.

In a new report, Weeks acknowledged Star made steady progress on its remediation efforts, including measures identified as key priorities. However, Weeks also noted progress had been slower than expected due to ongoing financial issues at Star.

As such, the government confirmed a 12-month deferral for the suspension. This, it said, will provide the operator the opportunity to continue to implement “key deliverables” under its remediation plan.

Had the government not intervened, the Star Gold Coast license was set to be suspended from September 30 this year. The suspension would have run for a period of 90 days.

‘Close’ monitoring of Star Gold Coast

Acting Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Jarrod Bleijie said despite the deferral, the government has “clear expectations” for Star.

“The Queensland government has the highest standards when it comes to the integrity of casino operations,” Bleijie said. “We will continue to closely monitor Star’s remediation progress to ensure key milestones are met.

“This deferral does not prevent us from taking immediate action should The Star fail to meet its remediation obligations.”

Weeks will remain in the role of special manager to Star Gold Coast throughout the deferral period.

The news came as Star was also informed that the suspension of its casino license for Star Sydney will remain in place until March 31, 2026.
