Palau casino referendum in June

The Palau Election Commission has announced a referendum on the issue of casino gaming will be held on June 22.

Marianas Variety reports that the vote must take place within 180 days of enactment of the casino referendum bill, which was signed into law by President Johnson Toribion on December 29.

Maria Decherong, election commission administrative officer, believes that at most half of the island’s registered voters will go to the polls.

“Just like in previous referendums and special elections, we expect a 50 percent or less turnout among the voters,” said Decherong.

Palau has more than 15,000 registered voters. Registration will close 15 days before the referendum.

Voters will be asked if they approve of casino gaming. If the majority say “yes,” the legislature will be required to establish a casino gaming commission. If the referendum fails, the legislature cannot consider the issue again.
