Key Takeaways:

  • MGM China introduces the first fully localized card recycling operation in Macau.
  • The program processes 3,000 tonnes of cards annually on-site, reducing waste and emissions.
  • Initiative aligns with Macau’s decarbonization goals and sets a precedent for sustainable gaming practices.

The program, developed with Macau firm Fnetlink Technology Company Limited, replaces cross-border disposal routes. It is intended to cut solid waste and transport-related emissions as part of the city’s push toward greener, more diversified economic activity.

“This program not only reflects our efforts to enhance resource efficiency through technology, but also highlights our determination to collaborate with local tech enterprises to turn research and development into practical applications,” said the executive per Asia Gaming Brief

The First IG To Adopt Localized System

MGM is the first integrated resort in Macau to adopt a fully localized system for playing cards.

Operationally, used cards are processed on-site by an automated, intelligent shredding mechanism that produces recycled fibers without water use; those fibers are then formed into packaging fillers and recycled boards, the partners say.

The initiative was presented at a launch attended by officials from Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau and Environmental Protection Bureau. Company statements framed the project as aligned with China’s national “Dual Carbon” commitments and Macau’s decarbonization goals. This comes after MGM China promoted Kenneth Feng as CEO late last year.
