Melco Resorts & Entertainment has quietly begun welcoming guests to REM Hotel at City of Dreams Macau, with chairman and chief executive Lawrence Ho saying the formal launch will follow October’s Golden Week. 

According to Asian Gaming Brief, Ho said: “We’ve actually soft opened REM already. We’re easing into it,” adding that “The grand opening is set for after Golden Week in October.” 

He framed the property as a high-end offer designed to sit alongside City of Dreams’ existing luxury stock while standing apart from the wider Macau market.

Luxury Reset

The new all-suite tower is the latest phase of a wider remake of Melco’s flagship Macau resort, which also includes a major overhaul of its retail areas. 

Ho said Macau’s premium hotel segment is already crowded, but argued REM is “unlike anything in Macau” and possibly the most distinctive luxury product in Asia. 

The operator expected the renovation to create a more deliberate retail and guest flow across the complex, though it warned that construction will continue to weigh on the property for months to come. 

Melco President Evan Winkler said disruption should remain significant until mid-2027, with some guest impact likely through next June.

Capital Discipline

According to earlier company disclosures, REM is the rebranded and rebuilt former Countdown Hotel, transformed from 330 standard rooms into about 150 ultra-luxury suites at a cost of roughly US$125 million. 

Melco opened an 18-table gaming area near the southwest entrance of City of Dreams at the end of July, aiming to draw more walk-in traffic from Cotai. 

The company is also holding back on dividends. Ho said Melco will buy back shares when it sees value, while chief financial officer Geoff Davis said the group will only restart payouts when it can offer a “substantive and meaningful” dividend.

City of Dreams Sri Lanka opened at the end of last year, making it the first integrated resort in South Asia.
