London’s Trocadero Redevelopment with Casino Approved
The historic Trocadero building in London’s West End is set to undergo a major redevelopment following recent planning approvals from Westminster City Council. The redevelopment is intended to transform the site into a combined casino and community hub.
Genting UK has unveiled plans to convert approximately 37,000 square feet of currently unused space within the Grade II-listed venue on Coventry Street into a new entertainment and leisure complex. The project follows Genting’s broader strategy of refreshing its UK portfolio, including the recent relaunch of its Stratford venue.
Key takeaways:
- Trocadero redevelopment in London’s West End will create a mixed-use complex
- The redevelopment features a 1,250-capacity casino within the landmark
- Project aims to modernize the site while preserving its heritage
Inside the Trocadero Redevelopment Plan
The Trocadero redevelopment will feature a two-story casino with capacity for up to 1,250 guests, complemented by a 75-seat restaurant. The gaming floor is expected to span up to 16,000 square feet, occupying parts of the basement, ground and first floors.
The venue is scheduled to open in October 2026. The casino will operate 24 hours a day, contributing to the West End’s vibrant entertainment sector. It aims to attract patrons who are at least 25 years old, emphasizing inclusive and diverse patronage with a secure design.
Genting UK Chief Financial Officer James Axelby, stated that the project aims to restore prestige to the Trocadero by modernizing the interior while preserving its architectural heritage.
Balancing Heritage and Modern Use
Axelby emphasized the importance of revitalizing the building to attract both domestic and international visitors, supporting the local economy and contributing to the wider regeneration of the iconic Trocadero.
The redevelopment also includes plans for a community hub within the same complex. This facility is expected to provide a space for local residents and visitors to engage in various cultural and social activities, fostering a sense of community in the heart of London’s West End.
Community Ambitions Shape the Trocadero Casino Plan
The Trocadero is a landmark that has experienced multiple transformations since its origins as a restaurant in 1896. It later became an amusement arcade and hotel. The current plan combines elements of entertainment, commerce and community service at one location, aiming to create a vibrant destination that caters to a diverse audience.
Local businesses and community groups have expressed mixed reactions to the Trocadero redevelopment. The Soho Society, for instance, has raised concerns about potential overcrowding along Coventry Street due to increased foot traffic and late-night activity.
However, the planning committee of Westminster City Council approved the plans unanimously, citing confidence in the casino’s management strategy to control crowd dispersal. Councillor Patrick Lilley, chair of the planning subcommittee, noted that exits from a casino differ from nightclub rushes typically seen in the area.
The decision comes as Genting pursues approvals abroad as well, including pursuit of a New York casino license.
