Slots study planned in U.K.

Britain’s industry-run Responsible Gambling Trust is launching the country’s largest-ever research program into the slot machine industry.

The so-called Category B machines under study are those that offer the highest stakes and prizes available. They are found in betting shops, bingo halls, adult gaming centers and casinos.

“There is significant consumer and political interest in Category B gaming machines, but there is a lack of robust evidence about how people play on these machines and what helps people to stay in control and play responsibly,” said RGT Chief Executive Marc Etches.

The US$800,000 study will commence in January under the direction of the National Centre for Social Research by gathering machine-related data that different gambling operators hold. This first phase, expected to take six months, will serve as a platform for the rest of the study.
