Counsel Without a Script

For Kelci Binau, a career in gaming law wasn’t part of the original plan. Like many law students, she entered the profession with a general sense of direction, but no defined specialty. That changed when a prominent gaming attorney introduced her to the industry, setting the course for a career that’s been shaped as much by openness to opportunity as by deliberate growth.

Starting at the Nevada law firm of McDonald Carano, Binau was exposed to the multifaceted complexities of gaming law. The work requires a combination of regulatory fluency, business acumen and the ability to navigate differing frameworks across jurisdictions. Rather than approach the field cautiously, she leaned into the challenge and developed expertise in areas such as licensing, regulatory compliance and enforcement, and supporting corporate transactions and related estate planning.

Her work includes guiding clients through licensing processes, advising on regulatory strategy, and supporting corporate transactions that require approval from gaming authorities. In a highly regulated industry, where timelines, approvals and compliance requirements are critical, the role requires both technical precision and the ability to anticipate issues before they arise. In many cases, the work sits at the intersection of legal, operational and regulatory considerations, requiring strategic coordination across multiple stakeholders.

Whether advising on market entry, helping clients structure their approach to licensing, or navigating evolving compliance requirements, Binau often must translate complex regulatory frameworks into actionable guidance. This ability is particularly valuable in an industry where regulatory issues can delay projects or materially impact operations. By helping clients move efficiently through those processes, she contributes not only to compliance but to the broader success of her clients’ business plans and project developments.

Those attributes allowed her to take on increasingly complex regulatory matters early in her career, accelerating her experience and her credibility within the law firm and with clients.

Central to that progress has been Binau’s healthy relationship with uncertainty. “The gaming industry is incredibly creative and rapidly innovative; enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace the unknown will allow you to see and jump on new and unexpected career opportunities emerging every day,” she says. That mindset reflects not only how she entered the industry, but also how she approaches ongoing professional development.

Equally important is her perspective on growth. Advancement, in her view, is not defined by titles alone, but by the substance of an individual’s contributions and their impact on the people and organizations around them. That philosophy is reflected in her leadership roles within the law firm and her active involvement in mentorship initiatives. By supporting junior colleagues and contributing to firm culture, Binau has positioned herself as a leader whose influence extends beyond her individual work.

Binau maintains a pragmatic view of how to navigate a rapidly evolving industry. The gaming sector continues to shift, with new technologies, regulatory changes and market expansions reshaping the landscape. Rather than try to align her career with any single trend, she has focused on building a foundation that remains relevant regardless of change.

“I don’t know that I would rely on any trend to establish a career,” she notes. Her approach prioritizes adaptability, strong relationships with gaming authorities, analyzing new market entrants and a deep understanding of regulatory fundamentals, allowing her to remain effective both to clients and to herself as opportunities emerge in her career.

Looking ahead, Binau continues to deepen her expertise and expand her impact within the industry. As gaming operations become more complex and laws and regulations evolve, she sees an opportunity to play a larger role in helping clients navigate that complexity with clarity and confidence. Her trajectory suggests a professional who is not only responsive to opportunity, but also prepared to capitalize on it.
