casino.net Publishes New Analysis of Canada’s Gambling Market
New analysis examines Ontario’s registration system, provincial regulation and why treating Canada as a single online gambling market can mislead operators and players.
casino.net has published a new analysis of Canada’s online gambling landscape, examining how provincial regulation is creating fundamentally different market conditions across the country.
Led by Dominic Pines, who writes casino.net’s Canadian market coverage, the analysis focuses on Ontario’s regulated commercial market and the distinctions between Ontario registration, provincial systems and operators licensed outside Canada.
Canada Is Not a Single Gambling Market
Unlike markets governed by a national online gambling framework, gambling in Canada is administered provincially.
Ontario has opened a competitive commercial online market to private operators, while players elsewhere in Canada can face significantly different regulatory conditions.
Pines argues that this makes province-level analysis essential when assessing the Canadian market.
“It is not one market and it never has been,” Pines said. “Gambling is administered provincially, so the honest unit of analysis is the province.”
Ontario Registration Provides a Verifiable Standard
The analysis also highlights an important distinction in the terminology used to describe Ontario.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario registers iGaming operators and suppliers. As Pines notes, this means describing an operator simply as holding a “Canadian gambling license” fails to identify the actual regulatory instrument.
iGaming Ontario also maintains a public directory of sites offered by registered and approved operators.
“In a market with a published directory, there is no excuse for ambiguity about regulatory status,” Pines said. “Either the operator is in the directory or it is not.”
casino.net says its Canadian market coverage records the regulatory status of listed operators to make this distinction clearer for players.
BetGuard Strengthens Ontario’s Regulated Perimeter
The analysis also examines BetGuard, iGaming Ontario’s province-wide centralized self-exclusion system launched in May 2026.
The system allows Ontarians to exclude themselves from regulated online gambling sites across the province through a single action rather than individually with each operator.
According to Pines, this creates a more tangible distinction between operators participating in Ontario’s regulated system and those outside it.
Greater Precision Needed in Canadian Market Analysis
Pines argues that one of the most common mistakes in industry coverage is treating Canada as a single addressable gambling market.
A player in Ontario can have a substantially different regulatory position from someone in Alberta or Nova Scotia, making national averages potentially misleading.
“Precision here is not pedantry,” Pines said. “It is the difference between a claim a reader can verify and one they cannot.”
