A New Monopoly

As slot themes go, few strike a chord with such a wide swath of generations as the legendary board game Monopoly. Regardless of your age, it’s a good bet you’ve played Monopoly since you were a child. The game is part of popular culture and has been for more than a century.

In July 2025, leading slot supplier Aristocrat Gaming and Monopoly owner Hasbro announced a multi-year agreement under which Aristocrat holds the exclusive rights to develop land-based slots carrying the Monopoly theme. The first title in the new series, Monopoly Big Board Bucks, was launched at G2E last October, and will be seen again at the Indian Gaming Tradeshow in San Diego March 30-April 2, with the first placements in California casinos shortly thereafter.

Aristocrat won rights to the license via an RFP, ending decades-long exclusivity held by Light & Wonder, going back to the first Monopoly-themed games from legacy company WMS Gaming in the late 1990s.

“To be selected as Hasbro’s land-based slot partner—after a highly competitive process—is a proud milestone for Aristocrat Gaming,” Aristocrat CEO Craig Toner said when the license was announced. “Our commitment to innovation and bold creativity sets us apart, and we’re excited to reimagine Monopoly slot games for today’s players around the globe.”

Aristocrat’s new Monopoly series is the latest news for a storied brand that has been spread across American culture since it was invented and patented by Lizzie Magie as “The Landlord’s Game” in 1904. However, the game took off in popularity after a salesman named Charles Darrow began distributing it under the Monopoly name and with the game board that later became familiar to all.

Darrow patented the game board and later sold the game’s copyrights to Parker Brothers, which began selling the game in 1935, its board lined with properties representing streets in Atlantic City. Under Parker Brothers, the board game gained the iconic status it still holds. However, it was Hasbro, which acquired Parker Brothers in 1991, that began to expand the brand to other channels, from McDonald’s sweepstakes games to instant lottery tickets to, ultimately, slot machines.

Aristocrat Gaming, meanwhile, was in the business of creating iconic slot families. With its first Monopoly-themed slot, the company marshals its design & development team—already responsible for the highest-earning land-based slot games in the industry—to capitalize on a theme with more natural elements that can be translated into slot features than arguably any other theme, from property values to game tokens to the iconic game board itself.

“We were confident that we could reimagine Monopoly slots the way only Aristocrat can, thanks to our commitment to innovation, bold creative teams, unparalleled marketing capabilities and so much more,” comments Matt Primmer, chief product officer for Aristocrat.

“Additionally, our team’s enthusiasm for the brand was the spark that drove our entire approach, and it continues to be the foundation of how we develop licensed IP. The Monopoly brand is one of the highest recognized brands in the world, and we knew our D&D teams would be able to translate it into games that we believe operators can’t live without.”

That meant employing the most popular game mechanics in the business, and using Aristocrat’s D&D prowess to breathe new life into a theme that lends itself to a wealth of potential. “We are Aristocrat—we have the top talent making the best content around the world,” Primmer says.

“We have a proven track record, and have earned the trust of our partners, operators and players. We’re extremely energized to bring that together to launch the next generation of Monopoly slots games to casino floors across the globe. What truly differentiates our approach is the passion of our creative teams. With Monopoly, we saw an opportunity to bring the brand back to its core identity and elevate those elements through Aristocrat’s design philosophy and technology.”

Monopoly Big Board Bucks is featured on The Baron Portrait cabinet. Primmer says the format, featuring a central 43-inch high-definition 4K curved monitor, allows for maximum impact of all the game’s visuals.

“The Baron Portrait features best-in-class technology from the monitor to the dynamic lightning to the sound,” Primmer says. “Its incredible floor presence is the perfect canvas for Monopoly Big Board Bucks to come alive through. We’re coupling it with an all-new eye-catching sign package, the Skyline, with acrylic LED-lit themed panel dividers and dual-tier LED toppers adorned with lit Monopoly signature property game pieces crowning the top.”

Aristocrat has used the “perfect canvas” to create a game that combines signature game mechanics in bonus events that pay homage to everything players will find familiar in the famous theme.

“In Monopoly Big Board Bucks, the creative team took to heart infusing nostalgia into the game play experience better than ever seen before,” says Primmer. “Game play of Big Board Bucks is very similar to playing the actual board game, with obvious key differences being this for a 21-plus audience and offers the chance to win actual money.”

Nods to the legendary board game begin when the player sits down at the game. “One of the first experiences for players is the option to select their token, just like in the board game, 13 options including the Scottie dog, top hat, race car and more,” Primmer says, adding that familiar game icons continue to appear throughout the game.

“Mr. Monopoly is prominently featured in the game as he travels around the iconic game board in the Big Board Bucks feature collecting gold bags, properties, houses and hotels. There’s also a Free Parking feature, another inclusion of a beloved part of board game play. We made the board and the tokens the centerpiece to bring the game back to the brand’s most recognizable IP.

“We saw an opportunity to reintroduce what makes Monopoly so special, and the result is a game that feels both true to the brand and unmistakably Aristocrat.”

Popular game mechanics from other Aristocrat hits are crafted into the familiar theme, including overlapping features, the Cash Collect Feature, Jackpot Wheel Feature and others.

The token the player selects at the beginning of play shows up as a reel symbol and as the token used in the main Big Board Bucks bonus feature. The feature is triggered by one or more of three collection pots that appear as different-colored Monopoly board hotels above the reels.

When the main bonus is triggered, the screen transforms into the familiar Monopoly board for free spins that send Mr. Monopoly and the player’s token around the board to light up a property and its value, utilities or other special spots on the board. If the “Extra Spins” pot triggers the bonus, “+1” symbols extend the bonus. “Extra Properties” starts the bonus with a random number of properties awarded to the player, and applies a 2X multiplier when all properties of the same color are collected. “Extra Houses” awards a random number of houses and hotels, boosting awards on collected properties.

Landing the “GO” spot in the main bonus triggers a Jackpot Wheel that spins to one of the game’s four jackpots, including the top Grand, a single-site progressive resetting at $10,000.

Landing “Free Parking” in the bonus triggers a miniature version of Aristocrat’s signature Hold & Spin bonus. A three-spin cycle locks cash-on-reels prizes, with the top Grand progressive awarded if all seven spots are filled.

All the bonus features are hosted by Mr. Monopoly in a presentation that remains true to the theme.

“All of the bonus features are direct reflections of the classic board game,” says Primmer. “The game has three overlapping features that offer upgrades and trigger the main feature of the game, the Big Board Bucks Feature. In this feature, the chosen token moves around the game board with Mr. Monopoly landing properties like Boardwalk and Park Place, houses and hotels, and railroads, which of course, reward a higher value.

“Monopoly Big Board Bucks will be a main feature at IGA as Class II gaming is a part of the Monopoly roadmap,” Primmer says. “The official debut of Big Board Bucks will take place at Yaamava’ Resort & Casino, and we could not be more thrilled to finally see player excitement for the game on casino floors. We can’t give too much away, but our teams have worked closely with the Yaamava’ teams to ensure a debut unlike anything seen before.”

Monopoly Big Board Bucks is the first of what is likely to be a long-running slot brand for Aristocrat. “This is a multi-year partnership with Hasbro, and with that, we have a robust roadmap of titles planned in the Monopoly family that will span across Class II, Class III and internationally,” says Primmer.

“Over the past several years, Aristocrat has taken a highly selective approach to securing and developing licensed products, ensuring the right balance between proprietary content and high-value licensed brands. With a focus on partnerships that offer strong recognition and player affinity, we believe Monopoly Slots by Aristocrat Gaming will not only emerge as a player-favorite game family but will also strengthen our broader portfolio, supporting long-term success for the company.

“Again, the real driver is creative passion, and we empower our teams to pursue development of IP they are passionate about, which translates into high-quality product. If there’s genuine passion within the team, that’s when we pursue the opportunity. Monopoly was a perfect example: the creative energy around the brand was undeniable, and that passion is what ultimately fuels the products we bring to market.”
