Merkur Grows Spain Presence with Arcade Acquisitions
Merkur Group has strengthened its footprint in Spain after acquiring arcade venues and taking over the operation of gaming machines in the Basque region.
The Merkur Slots Spain division of the group purchased 11 arcades from Operjoku in the Basque region. Merkur Slots Spain, the group’s Spain-facing subsidiary, is headquartered in Palma de Mallorca.
Meanwhile, the same subsidiary will take over the operation of gaming machines in over 100 bars previously serviced by Operkale. The company is a specialist in the placement of gaming machines in hospitality establishments in the Basque region.
Implemented in cooperation with Spanish distributor Merkur Dosniha, Merkur said that the acquisition marks a “significant milestone” in the expansion of its brand. It also represents its first entry into Spain’s hospitality segment.
Merkur Talks Up ‘Strong Synergies’ in Spain
Meik Sellenriek, management board member, Merkur Operations at Merkur.com, welcomed the development. He said Spain is a market of “great importance and long-term potential” for the group.
“This acquisition clearly underlines that,” Sellenriek said. “We are proud to welcome around 50 new employees to the company. I look forward with confidence to strengthening our market position.”
Dominik Raasch, management board member, Merkur Games at Merkur.com AG, added: “There are strong synergies between the Merkur Group’s business divisions. The successful acquisition of Operjoku and Operkale demonstrates how effectively we leverage these synergies to support our sustainable growth.
“We are particularly pleased to now offer our innovative gaming machines and games in our own arcades and bars in the Basque Country. This is one of Spain’s most economically powerful regions.”
