Aristocrat is using the tried-and-true Zorro theme to launch a new cabinet style, the Viridian Hybrid. It is a stepper format with a unique dual overlay on the reels that “shutters” from one to all five reels, permitting anything from stacked wild symbols to a combination of mechanical reel-spinning and video animation, all the way to a full video bonus event. Bonus animation is aided by a 32-inch portrait-style LCD in the top box.
The new game in the Zorro series utilizes all of the capabilities of the format, called “Active Reel Technology,” in a lineup of every style of bonus event and a three-level on-site progressive jackpot—a “Minor” resetting at $20; a “Major” resetting at $100, and the “Grand,” starting at $2,000.
The base game is a 25-line slot available in penny, 2-cent and nickel denominations. The five separate bonus events are activated by covering the lines and making a 15-credit ante wager.
The progressive jackpots are awarded through a bonus sequence called “Zorro’s Charge,” triggered by five of a kind of any of the top five paying symbols. The vertical top box transforms into animation of Zorro riding toward the player. When he arrives at the “village,” his sword slashes from one to four banners to reveal credit prizes. Zorro then may or may not toss a dagger toward the progressive meters as he rides off into the sunset. The Grand jackpot is only available with a maximum bet.
Other bonus events activated by the ante wager include both free-spin stepper features and full second-screen picking events. “Zorro’s Free Spin Feature” awards 10 free games, with an entire reel becoming wild on random spins. The “Tornado Wild Spin Feature” uses the “shutter” feature to close five doors over the reels. Zorro rides across the screen and randomly marks one to three doors with the iconic “Z,” turning those reels wild. The other reels are then spun until there is a winning combination. The resulting win is multiplied from 2X to 10X.
The two full-screen bonus events are “Coin Match” and “Village Search.” In Coin Match, the player picks coins to reveal credit awards until two match. A random multiplier may also be revealed. In Village Search, the scene is a village square. The player selects doors, baskets and other object to try to find a villain called the “Henchman.” Each pick reveals a credit award, and if the Henchman is found, that credit award is multiplied from 2X to 10X. If the Henchman is found on the final pick, the random multiplier applies to all credit amounts accumulated during the bonus round.
