Estonia grants license to PokerStars

Estonia has issued an operators license to the Isle of Man-based online poker provider PokerStars. The move comes less than two months after the operator received an activity license from the Estonian tax and customs board.

PokerStars Nordic & Baltic Director of Marketing, Michael Holmberg, said, “There are thousands of good poker players in Estonia and I am very glad that the license enables them to continue competing at the largest poker site with players all over the world.”

In the official PokerStars press release dated August 19, the company claimed an impressive 38 million players worldwide. As of that date, a whopping 48 billion hands had been dealt and 290 million tournaments organized. PokerStars, which has continued to accept play from American residents even after the passage of UIGEA, is acknowledged to be the largest online poker operator in the world.

The operator may have helped pave its own road to licensed operator by contributing to the development of Estonian sports and cultural life. For example, PokerStars is the main sponsor of the Estonian national volleyball team, which last year reached the finals of the European championship.

Estonian website PokerStars.ee joins the operator’s Italian and French sites, PokerStars.it and PokerStars.fr, begun in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

Said Holmberg, “There are thousands of good poker players in Estonia and I am very glad that the license enables them to continue competing at the largest poker site with players all over the world. PokerStars has been the most popular poker room among Estonian players for several years, and with the licensing system now put in place in Estonia, I am convinced the country shows the way for many other EU nations in terms of regulation.”
