The Pascua Yaqui Tribe opened the Sewailo Golf Club at its Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson, Arizona on December 12. Sewailo means “flower world” in the Pascua Yaqui language, and the golf course will live up to that definition with more than 30,000 native flowers, plants and cacti, including indigenous flowers and plants used in tribal ceremonies. The 200-acre course also features nearly 14 acres of lakes, streams and water features. It measures 7,400 yards from the championship tees with five different tee boxes at each hole.
Sewailo was designed by the renowned golf course architect Notah Begay III, a Native American and a player on the PGA tour and Golf Channel commentator.
Other course amenities include an extensive driving range, practice areas for chipping and putting, Callaway Golf equipment rentals and instructional programs. Troon Golf will manage the course.
Casino Del Sol Resort opened a new resort tower in 2011 and has since earned the Forbes Travel Guide Four Star award for its resort, Hiapsi Spa and P.Y. Steakhouse; AAA Four Diamond status for the overall resort; and the Wine Spectator award for P.Y. Steakhouse. Casino Del Sol also offers six restaurants and bars, a state-of-the-art conference center, Hiapsi Spa, Oasis pool and bar, two casinos and the AVA outdoor amphitheater.
