Tabcorp Sets Conditions
Tabcorp, which currently operates the tote in the Australian state Victoria, has told the government it wants a guarantee of exclusive rights should it choose to renew its license past 2012.
In particular, Tabcorp is concerned that no efforts are being made to stop independent bookmakers from offering tote odds betting. Given developments in the online marketplace, the concern is that nothing will be done.
The move also is partly a reaction to the government’s decision not to renew the company’s license to distribute slot machines when that arrangement expires in 2012.
Tabcorp sought compensation of A$597 million—about $400 million—from the government because of the slot license cancellation, but was denied. According to the company, the obligation to Tabcorp was created when the Victorian government floated the company, and it has been recognized in legislation and other official documents since 1994.
Tabcorp also owns some of the nation’s largest casinos, including Star City in Sydney, Conrad Jupiters in Queensland and Conrad Treasury in Brisbane.
