No FOBTs and More Tax in Ireland
The government committee that will be looking at creating a legal gaming industry in Ireland will not be considering the question of fixed-odds betting terminals, or FOBTs.
The machines, colorfully referred to by the opposition as the crack cocaine of gambling, are an important contributor to the bottom line in U.K. betting shops. For now, the outlook that Irish betting shops will be able to profit from them is not good.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that the Irish government will double the tax on betting operators from the current 1 percent to 2 percent.
The increase could be enough to drive some operators out of business.
