New York Commercial Casinos Postponed
Politicians who said commercial casinos for
New York state could be on the ballot as soon as November 2009 have learned they are mistaken. Lawyers who looked into the matter discovered that there must be three months between the initial passage of a constitutional amendment and the date of the succeeding general election, meaning the legislature would have had to move this summer to put the amendment to a vote next fall. Casino enthusiasts say politicians in search of new revenue streams and a public anxious for new jobs would probably have roundly approved the amendment to bring slots and table games to the state.
