Sri Lanka Joins the Casino Race
Now that the 26-year civil war has ended, the nation wants tourism
Casino operator Delta Corporation has plans to enter Sri Lanka in the next half-year.
Asian Tribune reports that India-based Delta plans to expand in Sri Lanka and in the region with an investment of INR10 billion, about $225 million, “in the next three years,” according to Delta CFO Hardik Dhebar.
The locations named are Colombo in Sri Lanka, the state of Sikkim and the territory of Daman, both in India.
Delta currently operates the Casino Royale, which is the largest of the casino ships registered in Goa, India, and the Kings Casino vessel at the same location.
Bloomberg reports that billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala together with investor Radhakrishna Damani bought an 11 percent stake in Delta in September. Forbes lists Jhunjhunwala as India’s 57th richest man, with a net worth of about $1.15 billion.
Delta is looking to profit from the revival in Sri Lanka tourism. Visits jumped 47 percent in the first eight months of 2010, the tourism agency reports.
