Australian Capital Looks to Lure High Rollers
Tabcorp’s Star City Casino in Sydney pulling out all the stops to compete with Crown’s Melbourne property
Sydney’s Star City Casino has plans to spend A$100 million on a fleet of private jets to bring in VIP gamblers. In addition, the harbor-front property wants to create a wharf capable of handling super yachts and offer penthouse suites with celebrity chef-designed kitchens.
Star City CEO Larry Mullin is going all out to attract whales.
“The only limits are our imaginations,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Mullin as saying. “The game plan is to put us on the map, so people traveling around the world put this casino on their lists as a place they have to visit.”
Mullin said the casino wants to redo the jetty area and create a wharf complex capable of attracting the owners of the largest ocean-going private yachts.
“That area is the sleeping giant,” Mullin said. “We’d love to accept those kinds of boats. The only issue we would have is that they fit under the Harbor Bridge.”
Hoping to join the VIP fray is New Zealand-based SkyCity, which is dangling the prospect of a possible A$250 million investment to upgrade its Adelaide, Australia property. The company is hoping to trade the investment for an easing of gaming regulations.
