More than a dozen casinos across Tunica County and in central Mississippi closed in May due to flooding of the Mississippi River, and several more were expected to shut down as we went to press. The casinos were expected to remain closed for at least three to six weeks, which could cost the state over $10 million in tax revenue.

Heavy rains along the Mississippi River basin have swelled water levels over 39 feet, the acceptable level for a casino to remain open. The Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners declared a state of emergency, and on April 27 began a staggered closing plan. Along with the guests and employees, all money and gaming equipment has been removed from the properties. Casinos affected include Resorts, Bally’s, Hollywood, Sam’s Town, Harrah’s, GoldStrike, Horseshoe, Roadhouse and more.

Some casinos in Iowa and Missouri have also been affected.
