Rank plans casino near Birmingham, U.K.

A proposed casino, hotel and office complex could be coming to the town of Oldbury, to the northwest of Birmingham in the U.K. The developer, St. Modwen, has given the plans for the project to Sandwell Council.

The Express & Star reports that the project would create 180 jobs when completed, plus a number of construction jobs during the build.

A spokeswoman for Rank Group said the company is eager to begin.

“We’ve moved forward by submitting the application and now we are looking forward to receiving feedback from the planning department,” said Amy Culora. “Obviously this is a long process and it does take time, but it will all be worth it in the end.”

The new casino would be a Grosvenor Casino, and could open as soon as 2012.

Sandwell banned all casinos in 2006 because of councilors’ fears that gambling would be encouraged in a deprived area. Rank was awarded a casino license a year before the ban came into force.
